Founded in 1986, Portland Brewing Company was an early pioneer of the craft brewing revolution. The brewery's first offering was Portland Ale, a clean crisp ale made with all Northwest malt and hops.

Portland Ale helped lay the foundation for a brewing resurgence across the country. In 2000 the brewery changed the name of its core product line to MacTarnahan's Brewing in honor of the company patriarch, Robert "Mac" MacTarnahan.
