Among the vital raw materials needed for beer brewing are malt, hops and water. Barley malt used to be imported but with the encouraging results from Boon Rawd's experimental barley cultivation in northern Thailand, a malting facility was set up in Chiang Mai which now supplies Boon Rawd with much of its needs. As for hops, a perennial climbing herb added for the bitter taste of beer, this

still has to be imported, mainly from Europe. The last major raw material, water, is scientifically treated for brewing purposes.
