The beer on which the brewery was founded in 1979 takes its name from the John Buchan novel "Greenmantle".

John Buchan spent many years of his childhood life in the village of Broughton where there is a museum dedicated to his memory.



Greenmantle hero Sandy Arbuthnot, a latter day James Bond is sent to Istanbul where he becomes a legend as described in the final words of the novel "He rode like one possessed and against the snow I caught the dark green shade of emerald. I knew that the prophecy had been true Greenmantle had appeared at last to a waiting people."



Greenmantle Ale is a dark copper coloured ale with a rich fruit bitter sweet flavour reminiscent of gooseberries and a pleasant, clean hop-bitter aftertaste .



Greenmantle falls into the category of a Scottish 80/- Ale and at 3.9% ABV is a very drinkable session ale.





Major ingredients are:

Maris Otter Malt, Roast Barley.

Hops used are English grown Target, Fuggles and Goldings.
