One of the classic British collectors' bottled beers: Thomas Hardy's Ale. Brewed and bottled by Eldridge Pope & Co. Ltd. of Dorchester,Dorset to commemorate the famous author, who lived in the vicinity. This almost annual issue commenced in July 1968 with the bottle shown here, an embossed Victorian pint with black and red wax seal, red velvet ribbon, and cork stopper. The label reads "In 'The Trumpet Major' Hardy wrote of Dorchester strong beer 'It was of the most beautiful colour that the eye of an artist in beer could desire; full in body, yet brisk as a volcano; piquant, yet without a twang; luminous as an autumn sunset; free from streakiness of taste, but, finally, rather heady" This beer was at the time the strongest beer in the world. A small back label states: This beer will improve if kept lying down at 55 deg F, and will last at least 25 years. Before drinking, stand bottle for 24 hours to allow natural yeast sediment to settle. DO NOT OPEN BEFORE JULY 1969.
