Gales (bought by Fuller's Brewery in 2005)

Brewed since 1959 in England

4.8 % alc. vol.

General

This distinctive, high quality premium bitter is brewed with the very best hand selected malt and hops. The resulting flavour has earned HSB a national reputation as one of the classic high strength bitters of England.

History

Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds (XXXL and XXXD) were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties. Today it is Gales major brand, enjoying great success in the Free Trade and as a guest beer for other brewers as well as being the flagship beer in Gales tied estate.

Tasting Notes

Palate: Very full bodied and silky textured yet well balanced malt and hop with complex fruit
Aroma: Floral hop with a hint of Dundee cake
