Beer brewing tradition in Ceský Krumlov goes back to 1336 when the citizens were granted a charter to make malt and brew and sell beer. In 1560 a new brewery was built using high-quality water. In 1622 the Eggenberg family gained control of Krumlov, and in 1625-30 the brewery was relocated to the building that houses it today. Under the Schwarzenberg family (1719) the building was gradually redone in Baroque style, and the brewery modernized. The first modern steam equipment was installed in 1882. A brewery is a complex organism, changing with history; but spirit and tradition are stronger than time, and thus the present brewery has been given the name EGGENBERG.
